The Indonesian archipelago of Raja Ampat is located near the northwest coast of Papua Indonesia. It consists of some 1500 islands, an area of 40,000 km².

The maps above show the area of Raja Ampat with Sorong the capital, Waisai the main city of Waigeo island, the names of the main islands around and the place of the village of Sawinggrai

The old map below shows the most famous diving and snorkling spots of the area. No exursions are more than 50 km away except Kawe and Wayag.

We can go and come back the same day.

The names on this old map are not exactly the same than on new maps. In the page "Snorkling" or "Diving" we propose you other maps much more précise.

Today, the islands around "Mengkara (Meos Manggara)," Minyaifuin "(Manyafun) and Gof Besar (West of Gam) are as famous as the first explored areas.

Most of these islands are not inhabited, sometimes some houses, on some of them there is a village.

The underneath map shows the protected marine spaces.

In the center of map you can see the town of Wasai, then a protected zone including the north part of Salawati, Batanta, the Dampier Strait between the South of Gam and Batanta, including Mansuar, Kri and Arborek.

Further north-west a black shaded area around Batang Pele and Manyaifun.

These are the places we propose for snorkeling and diving excursions.

Extrat from MPAThe Dampier Strait Marine Protected Area (MPA) is geographically divided into three parts, namely the coastal island of Batanta and the coastal island of Salawati, covering an area of 336,000 hectares.

The Dampier Strait MPA attracts many large fish, including sharks, skipjack, tunas, snappers, groupers, barracudas and jacks.

It is also a refuge for many marine mammals such as whales, dolphins and dugongs, and is particularly famous for its common aggregations of manta ray. The coral reefs of Dampier Strait are equally impressive - they offer the greatest diversity of Raja Ampat.

The current of the Pacific Ocean is strong, and this flow brings a lot of nutrients into the Dampier Strait for marine animals to feed and allow corals to thrive.

With Raja Ampat's underwater location, the local government determined that the Dampier Strait was the main marine tourism area.

In the Dampier Strait, the six villages of Sawinggrai, Arborek, Sawandarek, Yenbuba, Yenwaupnor and Arefi have been defined as the main villages to experiment with cultural tourism.

Interact with local Raja Ampat communities, observe traditional dances, see birds of paradise and go kayaking, can be experienced during village tours.

Until June 2013, there are nine dive stations run by foreign and local businessmen who are located on the border of the MPA and about 40 homestays.

Tourism activities in the Dampier Strait provide concrete examples to local imitators that conservation can bring economic benefits to the community through ecotourism.
